Port Jeff School Promotes the International Day of Peace: Fifth grade students from Edna Louise Spear Primary School met students from around the world during classroom activities for the International Day of Peace. Students in classes with Christine Wicks and Christine Bokina and Kristi Krieg learned about the Peace Crane Project as well as how to fold an origami crane and write a message of peace on its wings. Laura Kelly and Paige Lohmann’s class wrote letters to fellow students at a school in Essex, UK, describing the Port Jefferson school community and what it’s like to grow up in a village near the harbor .   3. Theater review: “Grease” Theater Three –Despite all the angst, anxiety, and acne, teens manage to have fun in the sun and fall in love. Theater Three’s artful production of the classic romantic musical Fat captures the essence of those rebellious high school years, subjected to peer pressure, hormones and initiating the rite of passage from adolescence to adulthood. The production will be on view throughout October and promises fun, laughter and good times to Island audiences. (
  4. News nearby: NY COVID-19 vaccine mandate for healthcare workers in effect, the unvaccinated have been fired. Northwell Health says about two dozen staff have already been fired for refusing the vaccine and the rest of the unvaccinated workers will also be fired. The Nassau Emergency Management Office is activated to help hospitals deal with possible staff shortages. Governor Hochul says that if there are not enough workers, she is also ready to bring in the National Guard to take their place. (News12)

  • ShopRite will close Long Island “The West Babylon ShopRite will close on Sunday, October 10,” The Greater Long Island reported. A ShopRite spokesperson told the outlet that the company has not reached the level of sales necessary to make the supermarket profitable. She reportedly said the associates will have the option of being transferred to other nearby ShopRite sites. (Daily voice)
