HONOLULU (KHON2) — Halloween stores are open and ready for a rush during this spooky season. But what’s new this year?
Party City VP of Operations Andrew Shum said cyberpunk is what’s hot and for the region of their decades, “It was the 20s and 50s. We’re now in the 80s and 90s. So this is all new, we did a lot more with festivals, so music festivals.

One thing Party City said is always popular is masks because they don’t require a lot of planning and are quick to put on. Especially the bright ones, they go fast!
Party City also said this year it has costumes from movies and newer classics like Halloween and Star Wars. However, as far as trying on costumes… “we’re still under the no try-on rule, just with everything that’s going on, you know, post-COVID. But, parents are encouraged to evaluate their child. So ask us for help. If you want to take it off, you can put it directly in front of your child to see if it fits or not,” Shum said.
Halloween costumes can be a bit pricey, so have the prices gone up? Shum said, “Halloween, you dress up and have fun, don’t you? So it’s a great season, you know, to treat yourself. We have tried to keep prices at the same level. So there are a lot of things here that we didn’t raise the price for and we fought tooth and nail to give our customers the best price.
Party City said the best time to get your costume is next week, but some customers are buying early. “This will be the third year in a row that we’ve decorated our condo and, you know, spooky haunted house,” client Stephanie Causin said.
