Fillies new to trotting are the stars of the OSS – Harnesslink

MILTON, JULY 6, 2021 – The two-year-old trotting racing fillies got their star ride at Woodbine Mohawk Park on Tuesday July 6 and Adare Castle and Elegant Mermaid won their Ontario Sires Stakes Gold Series debut.

In the $ 101,400 Premier League, fans liked the look of Adare Castle’s qualifying results – one win and one second – and sent her off as their top pick. Muscle Mass’s daughter and pilot Bob McClure of Rockwood, ON got off to a good start from Post 4 and had established command before the opening quarter: 29. They sailed up front through a half of 1: 00.1 and a three-quarter of 1:30, then clinched a four and three-quarter win in 1: 57.4. HP Felicity was second and Needa Little Magic third.

“The first day we hung her up she lay in the mud so I wasn’t too impressed that day but after that things went pretty well. She was a little scary all winter but she calmed down and once we started coming to Mohawk practice she just got better and better, ”said coach Mark Etsell. “The first time I qualified her, I mean she had already shown speed, but at home, you know, then I let her go a bit that day and she came back to the house in: 27.3 and I said, ‘Hmm maybe we have I have something here’. So Bobby qualified her next time and she comes home in: 28 and gets changed. She has such a fluid gait. It helps a lot, it can carry its speed on many paths, and it is also reasonable, so far anyway.

Etsell, a Rockwood resident, bought the filly at last fall’s Black Book yearling sale in Timonium, Md., For a whopping $ 10,000, a price that prompted him to check out her catalog and browse Adare Castle with a fine comb in search of a fault that he had missed early checks.

“I almost missed her, it’s a bit of a scary story. It was really hot there and sure enough you didn’t want to stay inside because of the COVID restrictions and stuff, so I was out having a drink with Aaron Byron and suddenly j ‘ve heard his name,’ recalls Etsell. “I ran in and they were stuck at $ 8,000. I raised my hand and they dropped the hammer. I’m going, ‘Hmmm did I buy the right horse? Was I bidding on something else? I’m like ‘No, that’s the number’. So I went back and looked at her again and said, “What did I miss? and there was nothing.

“She’s not a big, fat filly, maybe that was it, she was a little, I wouldn’t say on the small side, small average maybe. It was funny, I could have sold it five times after I bought it there, so I guess someone else missed it too, ”Etsell added. “I don’t know, our fortune, the misfortune of others, it made us feel good.”

Upon arriving in Ontario, Etsell’s longtime partners Robert Newton of Walkerton, Graham Hopkins of Chesley and Peter Porter of Port Dover, Ont., Purchased shares of Adare Castle, which repaid this investment and put some money in their pockets with the $ 50,700 she earned. Tuesday evening.

In the second, $ 102,200 Gold Division driver Sylvain Filion of Milton, Ont., Used a similar strategy with Post 8’s Elegant Mermaid. Sent out in the lead shortly after Q1 of: 28.1 , Elegant Mermaid clocked a half of: 59 and a three of 1: 29.1 quarters before securing a victory of two and a quarter in 1: 57.3. Fan favorite Grace was second and Lovin Julie third.

Elegant Mermaid, another daughter of Muscular mass, is a recent addition to the Ben Baillargeon barn and the Guelph, Ont. resident was impressed with her debut in the Ontario Sires Stakes.

“I didn’t have it this winter. She wintered in (New) Jersey with Andy and Julie Miller. They taught him everything, ”said Baillargeon. “She is a trotting filly with such a natural pace that she will earn money because she will trot on every track. I wish it was a little bigger maybe, but sometimes the best things come in small packages, don’t they. So right now I’m very happy with her. She behaves well, she trots well and I can’t say much else about her, I only had her for a week. I might sound like a genius, but I didn’t really get the job done on her.

Daniel Plouffe of Bromont, QC and Alexandra Verret of Magog, QC share ownership of Elegant Mermaid, who twice qualified at Gaitway Farm in New Jersey before moving north for her commitments on issues of Ontario.

Adare Castle, Elegant Mermaid and their fellow two-year-old trotting fillies will make their second Gold Series start at the Grand River Raceway on July 28.

The two-year-old trotting colts will make their Gold Series debut at the Campbellville Oval on Thursday July 8th. Fans can download a program and watch the live stream from the Woodbine Mohawk Park website and those who wish to attend in person can make a reservation. at /.
