Australian punks Amyl and the Sniffers are back with a bang on their second album Comfort for me, which fell earlier this month. Despite a more refined studio sound, the band’s brash and arrogant composition is still on full display here, with catchy arrangements and jagged solos.

To celebrate the new album, guitarist Dec Martens sat down to talk Sex magic in the blood, overture for Foo Fighters, and Seinfeld in the latest Q&A Indie Mixtape 20.

What are the four words you would use to describe your music?

Melbourne rock group.

It is 2050 and the world is not over and people are still listening to your music. How would you like to be remembered?

Hope they don’t have to remember it, hope we still play hip replacements like every other rock band

What’s your favorite city in the world to play?

Hamburg.

Who is the person who inspired your work the most, and why?

Lobby Loyde is the godfather of Australian rock. He played hard and looked cool and that’s how I try to be myself.

Where did you eat the best meal of your life?

In Porto, Portugal. We ordered Portuguese style chicken and fries and it was crazy. Everyone had grease on their fingers but it tasted so good.

Which album do you know every word from?

Sex magic in the blood by Red Hot Chili Peppers.

What was the best concert you attended?

I saw Power Trip play Roskilde and it was sick.

What is the best outfit to play and why?

I’m still trying to figure it out on my own, but I can’t go wrong with a t-shirt, jeans and some docs

Who is your favorite person to follow on Twitter and / or Instagram?

Ringo Starr.

What’s your most played song in the touring van?

“Bow River” by Cold Chisel.

What’s the last thing you googled?

How to sound interesting in an interview.

Which album is the perfect gift?

One that is signed by the artist and is worth a lot of money.

What’s the strangest place you’ve crashed on tour?

We had a weird hotel room in Brussels with three single beds in a row and an open shower like a changing room for a football club and two toilets, one with poo on it

What’s the story behind your first tattoo or favorite tattoo?

I was in Brisbane with a hangover, the weather was nice and humid. I was with our booking agent and he got a call asking if we would be playing with the Foo Fighters for a stadium show. He hung up and we compared the credit cards while cleaning up the spilled laundry. Then I got on a bus and got a “BAD BOY FOR LOVE” tattoo.

Which artists are preventing you from changing channels on the radio?

If AC / DC turns on, it stays on.

What’s the nicest thing someone has ever done for you?

My mother raised me and taught me all of her wisdom. She also paid all my public fines for drinking until the last. Nobody can beat that

What advice would you give to your 18 year old self in the past?

Wear more black oversized shirts, that’s not cool either.

What’s the last show you went to?

I saw COFFIN playing Tote.

What movie can’t you resist watching when it’s on TV?

Seinfeld.

What would you cook if Obama came to your house for dinner?

Steamed hams.

Comfort for me is now available on ATO Records. Listen now.
