International music publishing company Private Wave has confirmed the acquisition of Steve Kipner’s extensive catalog as a songwriter and producer.
Kipner, who grew up in Brisbane, burst into the music industry in 1965 when his band Steve & The Board signed with Festival affiliate Spin Records, joining Brisbane band The Bee Gees on the label.
After moving to London in 1969, Kipner formed a new group named Tin Tin, with Maurice Gibb producing the group’s debut album and partnering with legendary music entrepreneur and film producer Robert Stigwood.
Kipner then moved to Los Angeles to pursue a career as a songwriter and producer, his defining moment coming via a songwriting credit on Olivia Newton-John’s’ 80s hit, “Physical.”
Other important tracks written and produced by Kipner include the single “Genie In A Bottle” by Christina Aguilera on Billboard, “Breakeven” by The Script, “These Words” by Natasha Bedingfield and “The Hardest Thing” by 98 Degrees.
The songwriting veteran is also credited as a songwriter on Doja Cat and SZA’s recent single “Kiss Me More” due to his interpolation from “Physical”, making him one of the few songwriters to have co-wrote a Top 20 single in each of the past seven decades.
Kipner noted his admiration for Primary Wave’s Larry Mestel and Justin Shukat when he announced the acquisition of his voluminous edition catalog.
“I am delighted to enter into this agreement with Primary Wave,” said Kipner.
“I’ve always had the greatest respect for what Larry and Justin have built there. Their catalog of writers and songs speaks for itself.
Shukat, meanwhile, touted Kipner’s talent as a songwriter and highlighted the longevity of his work.
“Steve’s excellent catalog has proven that hit songs will continue to be heard for generations to come,” Shukat noted.

Newton-John’s own publishing assets were acquired by Primary Wave in a successful deal in November last year, with the agreement also giving it access to marketing, licensing, and synchronization to extend its brand to new audiences.
