Shane Richie: Why the EastEnders actor’s marriage to Coleen Nolan ended and how therapy helped her

Coleen Nolan and Shane Richie are two of the most famous faces on television.

Nolan first rose to prominence alongside his sisters in girl group The Nolans and has been a regular part of the ITV Loose Women chat program for over 20 years. She also starred in Dancing on Ice and won Celebrity Big Brother.

Richie, who lives in Reigate, has appeared in a number of musicals and TV shows, but is perhaps best known for playing Alfie Moon on EastEnders.

In 1990, the famous couple got married. The duo share two sons who are also performers, Shane Nolan, 33, and Jake Roche, 29. Their youngest son was the lead singer of Rixton and was previously engaged to former Little Mix star Jesy Nelson.

In 1999, however, the couple divorced when their children were still relatively young.

In her Upfront and Personal autobiography, Coleen said that after believing Shane was cheating on her, she discovered that the laptop he bought her for Christmas was recording her phone calls, reports The Mirror.

Thirty-three calls had been recorded and a curious Coleen went through them.

She said, “Unbeknownst to me, the computer Shane bought me for Christmas was taking all the calls at home.”

An alleged call apparently started with Shane saying, “Hello princess.”

“For a second, I relaxed,” Coleen continued. “Shane always called me that, so I just assumed he was talking to me.” But his next sentence confused me.

According to Coleen, now 56, Shane asked, “‘Are you between shows? What time do you finish? I’ll try to come back.'”

Coleen hadn’t been to a show for a while as she looked after the children in the south while he played Danny Zuko in Grease in Manchester.

In his own autobiography, Shane also admitted to cheating on Coleen with dancer and actress Claire Taylor.

Nolan however also admitted to being unfaithful to Shane while he was with the Nolan Sisters for a summer season in 1993. In her autobiography, she reveals that she met a keyboard player and carried on the affair for five weeks.

In a recent Mirror column, Coleen admitted that therapy had helped her cope with the confusion she felt after her marriage ended.

She said, “The therapy really helped me get over the confusion I felt when my first marriage was in crisis. It helped me think more logically than emotionally, and I came to accept that. I could still love him, but I couldn’t trust him and therefore I couldn’t stay married to him.The penny really went down.

Despite the divorce, the couple remain on good terms, with Coleen expressing his joy that Shane is appearing on I’m A Celebrity in 2020.
